Twenty

With all the excitement of purchasing the Burlington house the day before, I decide to keep the momentum going. I am already dressed, wearing green high-waisted, wide-leg trousers with a thin brown belt and an ivory short-sleeve blouse, when I phone Giovanna and ask if she would be willing to meet up for breakfast. I invite her to the Stirrup Coffee Shop, a new restaurant that opened a few months ago inside the Dude Rancher Lodge. I have heard rave reviews about their fresh ingredients and welcoming feel.

After I hang up the phone, I turn toward Lavio, who is feeding Gregory in his highchair. “Would you be willing to spend an hour or two with Gregory while I meet Giovanna for breakfast?” I ask, feeling a little guilty for not giving him more notice.

He looks up at me with the spoon hovering between the bowl of baby food and Gregory’s mouth. “You don’t even have to ask me if you can leave our son with me, my love. I’m happy to spend time with him.” Gregory looks at the spoon mere inches away from his face and starts to scream at Lavio. We break out in laughter, and the suddenness of our laughter causes Gregory to stick out his bottom lip before crying. We try to console him, using our happiest voices to tell him that everything is okay. Within a few minutes, he finally stops crying and hesitantly takes the bite of baby food.

“I just didn’t know if you had any plans today, and I feel like I should have asked first,” I say while looking down at Gregory.

“Well, what would you have done if you had plans and I left you with Gregory?” he asks.

Without thinking, I answer, “Well, I would have either taken him with me or canceled my plans if Gregory couldn’t come along.”

Lavio smiles at me and gives me a look, like he already knew my answer. “Why would it be any different for me then?” he asks, without letting me answer. “If I need to go somewhere, my son will come with me. If he can’t be where I’m at, then we don’t go and I reschedule. There’s no difference.”

He’s smiling at Gregory, and I reach over to put a hand on his forearm. “You are the most loving father and husband, and I hope I didn’t hurt your feelings with what I said.”

He smiles at me, and we lean in across the table to give each other a kiss, causing Gregory to squeal with happiness. “Now go have some fun coming up with design ideas with Giovanna, and we will see you when you get back,” Lavio tells me.

I pull up along the curb at 415 North Twenty-Ninth Street and park my car. Reaching across the seat, I grab my purse, which is holding four different design magazines that I dog-eared the pages of wherever I found something that interested me. When I walk through the door, I see that Giovanna is already seated, waiting for me with two colas.
